Following on from the CV blog I thought it was important to mention the COVERING LETTER. With a rapidly changing job market, do not even consider sending out your CV without one. If you want to stand out from the crowd, this is your opportunity to do so.
Here are a few tips!
1. ALWAYS SEND ONE
Hiring Managers and Recruiters can be swayed by a really good covering letter, so make sure you write a bespoke one!
2. FIRST, BE INTERESTING
You have just a few seconds to grab the readers attention, so start with whatever it is about you that will grab their attention. For example, if you were recommended, mention who this is.
3. SELL YOURSELF
Pick out a couple of relevant examples valid to this specific opportunity, even if these examples are on your CV and make sure you explain the relevance of these to give them maximum impact. If you can provide statistics and numbers even better! Hiring Managers and Recruiters love data, statistics and numbers and if you're regularly smashing your targets.... we need to know!!
As you finish your covering letter, make sure you complete with a specific statement of just what your next step will be. If you are planning to follow up with a telephone call, be specific as to when this will be.
5. KEEP IT SHORT
Resist the urge to create the next Great British Novel! Follow the points above and keep it short and sweet, remembering to check for typos too!
